Iceberg: Book Review
'Iceberg' by Jennifer Nielsen is based on the legendary Titanic ship that sunk in the deep seas. The story follows the doings of a girl named Hazel Rothbury who boarded the ship as a stowaway in third class to reach America to work with her aunt and support her family. But ambitious Hazel who is determined to become a journalist investigates the ship to write an article about it which she can sell to earn money and avoid working in a factory. The story outlines her findings about the ship, about the secrets of the people on board, her friends and advisors, the unnecessary walls of class, and the ultimate courage shown by all people from all classes.
While the book may be a little lacking in colour and imagination, the ideals and messages, the expression of courage and survival, sacrifice and loss are all conveyed. An amalgamation of fact and fiction, the Iceberg is perfect for those who enjoy learning through stories.
The characters are built with perfection, as they have equal qualities and flaws. Nielsen has delivered many moral lessons through the learnings of Hazel, and emphasizes how having an inquisitive mind will always benefit one. The divides of class are portrayed in a raw manner, and how beautiful friendships can emerge despite these walls. Nielsen has not undermined any of the classes in the book, as the ambition, dreams and struggles of the third class are expressed heartwarmingly, while the hidden humility and courage of the first class is revealed.
The book also has a scientific aspect as Hazel investigates the ship, showing more of the technical sides and how the ship might sink. The highlight of the book is that many of the facts are derived from the actual incident, exposing the complete event to us. Thus, Nielsen has successfully combined science and morals through the eyes of a young girl.
While the book may be a little lacking in colour and imagination, the ideals and messages, the expression of courage and survival, sacrifice and loss are all conveyed. An amalgamation of fact and fiction, the Iceberg is perfect for those who enjoy learning through stories.
